Same design, but dual-core action under the hood.
After three iterations that looked more or less the same, Apple finally shook things up with the iPhone 4 and gave the device a cosmetic redesign. However, if recent rumors are to be believed, the company doesn’t have plans for another redesign with the iPhone 5.
A recent post over on Apple Insider provides some juicy details about the upcoming iPhone 5, including the fact that it will not be all that different from the iPhone 4 as far as aesthetics go. However, on the inside things will be quite different. AI cites a resource note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo with Concord Securities that claims the device will feature an 8-megapixel camera, an improved antenna design, the new A5 chip that powers the iPad 2 and iOS 5. The note also corroborates rumors that production has been pushed back until September.
The improved camera would be a welcome addition, and the antenna design is pretty much a no-brainer considering the grief the current design has caused for Cupertino. The most interesting part of the research note is that the iPhone 5 will get the 1GHz dual-core A5 processor. This would elevate the iPhone to the ‘superphone’ status enjoyed by the handful of dual-core smartphones available thus far.
Kuo’s note assumes that while Apple will unveil the new iPhone at WWDC in June, the phone will not go into production until September of this year. The analyst also claims that because of the shortage of components brought about by the Japanese tsunami, it’s possible that Apple will not unveil a new iPod touch in September, as is the norm for the Cupertino-based company.
